My wife has an old Pentium 2 laptop that originally came with Windows 98. She upgraded the hard drive to a 20 GB drive and put in an extra 128MB of RAM as well, after installing Windows 2000. However, it always crashes when you need it the most. If you run more than a few applications at a time (e.g. Outlook, a web page, and one more webpage perhaps), it CrAsHeS! She is tired of all these crashes and wants to run the recovery CD that came with the laptop so that she can have a laptop that is stable. She has tried (and I have tried to help as much as I could) softwares like System Mechanic etc but the system still crashes often. ---> The question is, if she backs up her important files (from My Documents), and runs the recovery CD, will the 20GB hard drive and the 128 MB extra RAM be detected?? I ask this because these were not present when we bought the laptop - so if the recovery CD's purpose is to restore the laptop to it's original condition, then will that mean that it will not detect the new hardware? This may be a silly question, but I guess I am just trying to be cautious, and trying to learn from you gurus out there! Thank you for your time. P L E A S E H E L P ! |

Have you tried removing the extra ram you installed to make sure you didn't get a bad stick? Also, did you format the new HDD and install win2000 fresh?
