Hello. I was hoping someone would be able to help me with two major questions/problems i have with windows 98
This first concerns HD Partitioning. This is the first time i have even thought about partitioning my hard drive but in an effort to make it more efficient i'm prepared to try something new! (I have bought Partition Magic to make my life easier). I am hoping to have 4 HD partitions, C: (which is already my current drive) for the Win98 OS, E: for my personal files + programs, N: for my virus checker and firewall, and S: for the swap file. If i create the partitions and move all the files i'd like to keep to partition E:, make a win98 boot disk and use the FORMAT C: /s command will i lose the files on partition E:? I am just wary of this because i sadly have no means of file backup and as C: is the actual drive at the moment i am worried i lose files i'd rather keep! My second question has actually been a major problem for me for as long as i can remember using my current computer. This problem usually occurs because of GZipped output, so let me explain best i can (Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.1998, IE Version 6.0.2600.0000IC, but the problem also occured using IE5.5, and IE 4 if i remember rightly). The problem: If i view a page with Gzipped out put, such as this one, and press the refresh button in IE, the page loads up again but about the first 250 characters are missed out from the page. GZipped output usually also causes a problem with all the JPEGs i view afterwards (but a system restart solves the problem until something weird desides to happen again). Every JPEG there after has Pink vertical lines down them, and i do not know why. This does not effect Gifs. IF i save the JPEG and view it in Paint Shop pro for example, the pink lines do not appear. Sometimes i have problems with pink lines down images even before i view a page with Gzipped output, againly only on JPEGs. Other problems which are usually rarer but do still occur is that pages with GZipped output just do not load at all (such as google sometimes, or even this forum), and pages with .php extension will not load (although i think that is mainly because of the Gzipped output problem). If anone would like a screen shot of either of the problem let me know. Please help as this problem as been a plague to me for years |

Well, I can help you with your first problem. Yea, you can format the C:\ drive and not lose anything on your other drives, so you can lay fears to rest.

I do not believe you can assign those drive letters to partitions in 98 - you will have to take the C, D, E, and F it deals you.
I wasn't aware that web pages used GZip - can you elaborate? |

Thanks for the note on HD letters... Damn Wn98
![]() Gzipped output. This is possible using PHP for example. The content is sent gzipped and the browser then deals with the rest... I suppose it ungzips it if that is the correct term. I don't actually know all that much about it, but it is possible and i have done it before using PHP scripts i've made. And i know vBulletin does this as it is listed on the options section. i just found this article which probably explains better than i do ![]() http://www.phpbuilder.com/columns/pi...21.php3?page=3 |
