2000 or XP?
My sister-in-laws sister wants me to build her a computer. Which OS would be better? 2000 Pro, XP Home or XP Pro? She's a school teacher. I will be used at home. She has kids so Im sure some games will end up on it. It will be primarily used for Office applications, internet and an all around computer.
Thanks |

I would vote for XP home. My personal favorite in the Windows world is 2000 but some people find it harder to configure stuff because it was designed mostly for system admins. XP is pretty stable and easy to configure. Just make sure you don't scrimp on the RAM. XP likes to eat up RAM.

I think XP Home would probably work best. That is what I have on my home computer and I have no complaints. 2K and XP Pro are less user-friendly and have features that no basic home user probably needs.

XP home would be your best bet. It is the most user-friendly of the 3, and also the least expensive. Unless they are using the computers for business apps, XP home is a great choice. Only $88 + shipping at newegg last I checked.

Another one in favor of XP. I have Pro but if I ever upgrade my wife's PC from 98, I will use XP Home.

i'd vote for xp home, too. xp pro and 2000 would work too, but getting 2000 over xp might not be worth it.

Just in case the 6 previous votes for WinXP Home didn't convince you... my vote is for WinXP Home.

Win Xp home is great, but with younger kids of school age you probably also want games support & a lot of older & budget games won't run on XP, why not dual boot Win88se & WinXP home? Not trying to influence anyone but I am having some hassle with XP *& games support.

I don't sell enough of the GeForce cards to really comment, but the Radeon's setup quite nicely.

Whichever is in your price range - all the Radeons are decent cards. You can save some $$$ with one of the "Powered by ATI" cards from a 3rd party, ATI has a reference driver on their website for these, just like Nvidia.

Bosco: Sweet!
If you want overclocking options, get the Asus P4T-E or P4T533 instead of the Intel board. However, the 850MVL is solid as a rock. |
