NT4 WKS and Internet Explorer connection

It's been a while since i worked with NT4WKS and IE 4.0

Person installed AOL and setup as default. When trying to use IE 4.0 it tries dialing up an old compuserve account.

I need to install SP6a and IE5.5 but can't remember how to change the default on the current IE. I tried running through the setup wizard but it doesn't respond. I tried dialing up to AOL with dialup networking but aol didn't allow me to connect.

any suggestions?

thanks

You have to connect to AOL with the AOL dialer, not dialup networking. Then you can use IE standalone.

GLC,

First thing i tried was using IE when already connected via AOL . I was able to use the browser within AOL. Trying to use IE i get an error saying no connection found.

I was able to download the SPs via the browser in AOL but when i try to install them it searches for a connection and even though i'm logged on and have a browser window open..it tells me NO Connection found.......it then tries using dial up networking.

What version AOL are we talking about here? NT and earlier 32 bit AOL versions did not get along well at ALL - I have a hunch that you might be dealing with 3.0 or 4.0 16 bit (the help - about will say "for Windows 3.1) - and if this is the case, you will never get a standalone "Winsock" app running without putting a standard DUN isp on it or trying to get AOL 5.0 on it.

You're right...that's the problem now that you mention it. They are running AOL 4.0.

If i install AOL5 or greater which are 32 bit versions will i be able to run IE without a problem?

thanks for the feedback

Yes, as a matter of fact 5.0 is the ONLY 32 bit version of AOL that works on NT. As long as it's 32 bit, IE will run standalone.
