Windows XP Stop error

I have recieved a stop error in Windows XP three times now, what happens is the hard drive sounds like it's in trouble then i recieve the stop error:

stop:c000021a unknown hard error

For a little while after the error the primar master isn't detected.

Are windows stop errors caused by software or have i got a faulty hard drive. If it's caused by a software error restoring my system would be the fix but my woory is that the hard drive is faulty, any info would be great.

Thanks,

Richy

If this is happening after the hard drive isn't detected, go to the web site of the drive manufacturer and see if they have a diagnostic utility to check out your drive. Post back with your results.

Hi richy_2k,

List your system specs and the manufacturer and model of the hard drive you're using.

Is the hard drive jumpered properly for the type of IDE cable you're using? Master or slave setting for normal 40 wire IDE cable, CS (cable select) for 80 wire ATA66/100/133 IDE cable.

Also do as HAL9000 suggests and get the hard drive utility from the manufacturer's website. Sounds like the drive is defective.

It's a laptop pc so ican't touch it or i'll lose my warranty. I have it booked to be picked up and took away but i'd rather not do that if the drive is alright.

The specs are

celeron 1.3 ghz
512mb ram
30gb fujitsu mhn2300at

i have downloaded a diagnostic tool from fujitsu, i'll give it a look but i haven't had the error for two days but i did get it three times in three days.

chkdisk says the drives fine but i can't get the fujitsu diagnostic tool to work. I might just let them take it on Monday and let them replace the hard drive, at least i know the hard drive's definitely ok that way.
