Millenium Edition Mouse and Keyboard Problem
I'm fortunate enough to have WIndows Me on my computer
It came preinstalled when i bought it (about two years ago) Starting a couple of days ago, I've been having problems with my keyboard and mouse. After booting up, after a varying amount of time, either the mouse, or the keyboard, or both stop responding. The mouse pointer sits where it is, and stops moving. buttons and scroll wheel stop responding. The keyboard won't put anything on screen when as i type, and the lights for NL, CL and SL don't change when i hit the corresponding buttons. Other than that, the system still appears to be responding, for example, if the stop responding while a web page is loading, it will finish loading up properly, but i can't use the mouse or keyboard to do anything with it. I've used a system disk to run a full surface scandisk in dos mode. I've run reg clean, and i've uninstalled any ssoftware i had recently installed that i felt could be causing the problem. I also ran a full virus scan using AVG. nothing turned up. If i can't fix the problem, then I'll have to install windows 95, as this is the only windows cd i have, and i genuinely can't afford anything else, even 98se, which is now only £128 standalone and £70 upgrade. I really won't be able to work with 95, as i think it lacks USB support, andmuch of mysoftware won't work. Any bright ideas? If anyone knows how it is possible to copy certain windows files to CD to reinstall it after formatting, this would be appreciated, becuase as i said, it came preinstalled. System Spec: 800mhz athlon 160mb sdram MSI 6316 MoBo (onboard sound and video) the mouse and keyboard are keyboard are cheap ones that came with the system, the mouse is an MS intellimouse with a ball (not optical) and a scroll wheel. the keyboard is unknown its very frustrating, and i have had to reset the computer 3 times whilst writing this thread in notepad, saving as i go. any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated. If the keyboard lights don't even change, you have a hardware problem, not an OS issue. Things to check are overheating, bad ram, or possibly a bad motherboard.

Nothing hardware side of things has changed for a while, and everything has been working fine previously for a year and a half or so.

Ok. i checked on the things you said. i tried each of my 3 dimms on their own with no change.
I don't think there can be owt wrong with the motherboard, as everything works fine, even after the mouse and keyboard have stopped responding. I used a game in which i have a usb steering wheel, and after the mouse and k/b have stopped responding, the game works fine, with no drop in performance, so i doubt overheating is a problem either. I went through my CDs and disks, and found all I have is 95, which claims to have USB support, so i guess thats 95c. i also have 3.11 on floppies, but i'm not putting that on. The solution i would most like is to know how i can make an ME installation disk with whats already on the system, as it came preinstalled, although i fear that isn't a possibility. Particularly as it would enable illegal copying of windows, as I don't have a CD key. |
