Hi all,
A roommate of mine is hooking up to the LAN (via a Linksys router) i have in the house. He has a laptop running Win2k professional, with a Xircom NIC/modem card. When we first hooked him up, he had access to other computers on the network, but no internet. I added NetBUI, and made IE detect the network settings... and it worked then. Last night he tried to hook it up again, and the same thing is happening. But nothing I do makes the internet come back.. I tried reinstalling Netbui, but that did nothing. I can't remove (to reinstall) TCP/IP because a service is using it, and I cannot cancel that service. I tried in Safe Mode but couldnt get to the Network Properties. I ran IPCONFIG and it appears that the router is not assigning an IP to his computer.. and it will not allow me to renew. I tried it on a couple ports on the router and still no dice, even with different cables. I did grab a couple files off of my computer via the LAN, so things do work - but why do you suppose I cannot get an IP on this machine? And I did try to manually assign one, but the router still wouldnt recognize it. Looking at the packets sent/recieved, the computer is sending, but not recieving anything (unless I pull files from another computer on the network. Any ideas? Thanks!! pete |

Are his network settings under the TCP/IP properties set up to "obtain an IP address automatically"? As well as DNS?
How about the NIC...is it seated properly and is the Cat5 all the way in? Being it is 2000, you should not have to reboot.

Yup, its all set to dynamic.. i wonder about the NIC, its a PCMCIA, and the cable does not seem to sit right in the jack... but it seems to only have internet problems.

Hmm. You can browse the local network though? What are the settings on the router?

Hmm, my provider will lock my modem if I switch it it to a different PC, is that not a possible problem?

How many DHCP clients is the router set to accept? The Linksys is 50 by default, did you change that by chance?
Try setting things static - give the machine a static IP in the same subnet but out of the DHCP scope, use the router's internal IP for default gateway and DNS. Netbeui can be troublesome in Win2K - try disabling it and trying again. |

peteS99,
NetBEUI is not a routable protocol. It is used primatily for file sharing in Windows and only works for computers on the same subnet. It would have no bearing on internet access. That would be TCP/IP. Having IE discover the settings is probably what adjusted the TCP/IP settings the first time and made it work. I would do as glc suggested and just set it to static if this is a short-term issue. The Old Man |
