I have a Compaq computer running Windows XP. The other day I used a recovery cd to reformat my hard drive. Now when the computer starts up and reaches the desktop, the computer will hang for like a minute or two. Then it will unfreeze by itself and then the computer works fine. I removed all the external hardware printer, scanner etc... and still have the same problem. I contacted Compaq and they have no idea what the problem is. I did a Windows file integrity scan, and no problems showed up. I did a virus scan and no viruses were found. I defragmented and the freezing problem was still there. I even went to msconfig and did a selective startup, and the problem still persists. If anyone knows or had this type of problem, please tell me what the remedy is. Your help would be greatly appreciated. All hardware was pre-installed on the computer. The computer has all updated drivers and software.

Hello,
I think that this 'problem' is caused because your PC is not connected to a network. If not connected to a network the pc will still search one till it times out. You can workaround this one-minute-freeze by specifying an IP address. Rightclick on "My Network Places", select properties. Rightclick on LAN-connection, select properties. There in the box scroll down to "Internet connection (TCP/IP)" and double click on it. Now you can set your IP address, i.e. 192.168.0.1 and subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. Restart. PC shouldn't freeze anymore after bootup. RJ
