Basic ? on 1.5 GB free space
Hi friends,
I am sorry if I am asking a very stupid question. When Microsoft says you need 1.5 GB free space for Windows XP, what does it actually mean? Does it mean 1.5 GB for Setup to finish successfully or 1.5 GB for System Restore, Memory Management, I/O Management, Temporary Files etc. In other words, is 1.5 GB a pre-installation requirement or post-installation requirement. If it is a pre-installation requirement, can I install XP on a 1.5GB partition. Thanks a lot Gautam Bhagwandas |

You need AT LEAST that much space for WindowsXP to even fit on the drive after installation. I do not know if it would even attempt to install with less than that, I have never tried. I think a 1.5 gig partition is the same as having a 1.5 gig harddrive(if there was such a thing) with one large partition, more or less.
I would give it at least two gigs if you are going for a bare minimum. Then you could have a paging file. Of course you could havea paging file on a different partition..... |

Oh yeah and I am not aware of a way tell what XP what to install like in 98. All I know of is going in to Add/Remove Programs (after it is installed) and going through Windows components. There fore, if this was the only way to decrease the size of windowsXP, you would still need the same amount of space to actually install it.

I wouldn't try to install it on a 1.5GB partition. Some programs don't give you the option of installing on the partition of your choice. Forcing itself on the windows drive. Temp files could quickly fill up the drive too. My partition was initially 3GB, but that filled up and I had to partition another GB.

It needs about 900 megs for the os, and the rest for swap and temp stuff. Plus there always needs to be some slack in a drive or the os freaks.
Member when ya thought 98 was huge at 100 megs plus? |
