Always have to type "win" DOS prompt...!?

I have a PC with Windows 95 - I have had problems with it which I recently tried to fix. Everything appears to be OK now however...every time I turn the power on the computer begins to boot but then stops. I then need to type "win" at the prompt which allows the computer to continue to load.
I used to be able to solve this problem, as it has happened before, but unfortunately I've totally forgotten what to do!!
I think I solved it before by re-installing Windows but I've tried this and half way through the installation process it say an illegal operation has been performed and shuts down!
Your time and help is much appreciated, Thanks, Mark

At the prompt, enter
PATH

Does the result include c:\Windows and c:\windows\command?

If not, either add these to the path statement in autoexec.bat or if you aren't running DOS programs, rename autoexec.bat (and config.sys)
