Can't get Video drivers to install after WinXP repair
I have Win XP Home and ATI Radeon 8500 128. My son downloaded a Trojan Backdoor virus, Backdoor_AGT. McAfee (with very latest update!) was unable to clean, delete, or quarantine it. We downloaded the free trial of Norton AV, but it failed to run. So my son (without checking with me!!!) tried getting rid of the virus by doing a O/S repair after booting from the installation CD. After this, *THEN* McAfee found over 100 infected files, and he was able to delete them all. I think he may have deleted some critical system file, like perhaps the INF file XP uses to load the ATI driver. After the repair, Windows was still in 1024x768x32 resolution, but I noticed that all hardware-accelerated apps were extremely slow...I checked the device manager, and there was not even any display device listed! I went to DISPLAY from control panel, and found that the ATI drivers were indeed not loaded, it said that the driver name was "VGASAVE", and all the other info under properties just said "unknown". I tried reinstalling the ATI drivers from the driver CDROM (ATI), After a couple of attempts, I got the installation to work without an error message. I then had the ATI Radeon device listed in device mgr. , but with the exclamation mark, and the message was "Windows cannot initialize the driver for this hardware" (code 37). I tried deleting the driver, since there was now something to delete in ctrl panel, and also deleting the driver software from ADD/REMOVE SOFTWARE. But this still did not cause Plug & play to pop up on reboot, and it was still using "VGASAVE" 1024x768. I then tried reinstalling ATI drivers, but I have the same error message "Windows cannot initialize, etc." We also tried reinstalling ATI drivers from safe mode, no joy. If I could get it back to the default 16-color 640x480 VGA mode when no device driver is installed, then I would think that I could get the ATI drivers to install & initialize. But I can't get rid of it, as there is no option under DISPLAY PROPERTIES/DRIVER to delete or uninstall it, and it doesn't appear in device manager.
Or... is "VGASAVE" the normal XP default driver w/ no drivers installed, and that is why there is no option /way to delete? I,m really screwed for now, as my Vegas Video runs at about 1 frame per second!! Also, I was looking for some registry check utility in XP (I don't have Norton Utilities for XP), but didn't find one. I'm thinking that maybe the XP repair didn't fix some problem with the registry. It would take many hours of work to do a reinstall of XPand all my apps, so I am trying EVERYTHING trying to avoid that. Thanks for any and all help. |

What OS repair was done?
Was it using the repair console? |

Jim, I am currently having the SAME EXACT problem. It's really annoying and i'm beginning to give up on it. One thing that I did that I wish I hadn't was disable whatever video adapter it was using. Now when I boot up windows the windows loading screen shows up, but then it just goes black. I tried repairing it agian but it has not done anything. I think I can copy my crucial files off it onto my linux partition and then reinstall windows, but i'm not sure how to do that. Gotta ask the linux people
![]() Good luck. |

Yea, I tried disabling the "VGASAVE" driver or device....wring move. I got the display back by booting up into safe mode, going back to adapter properties, then turning the device back on.
I am going to try re-installing my old GeForce2 card tomorrow... will see if plug and play activates and prompts for drivers. temporarily swapping out a different adapter might, I hope, get it going again. The repair I did, btw, was not repair console. If you start the installation from XP disk, then after it loads all its drivers, there is an option to repair an existing XP OS...that is what my son did. |

Try running system file checker. Just open a command prompt and type in SFC. It will prompt you to use the appropriate command line switch. Have your XP CD handy as it will need it.

Will try file checker Hal9000. I tried switching back to the old GeForce 2 GTS card. P&P did not detect it when XP started. There was no display adapter listed in Device mgr., so I ran the Detonator XP setup. It seems to install OK, no error messages.
I rebooted. After boot-up, I checked device mgr again....there is still NO listing for display adapter, and hardware acceleration is inop. "VGASAVE" is still shown in display adapter device properties. AAARG! |

Funny thing. I tried to run file checker as Hal9000 said. It prompted me for the Windows PROFESSIONAL CD. It would not accept my Windows XP HOME CD. Guess this function is only available to XP Pro owners. I am screwed. Unfortunately I don't know anyone who has XP Pro.

You may want to save your files, etc.
zero fill the drive and reinstall the OS. The virus may have damaged more than the OS,and this may be the only way to be sure. |

It makes no sense! I had a file checker utility using Win 98SE.
So why doesn't Win XP Home have a useable file checker? |

I run Home Edition as well, and it DOES prompt for the Pro Edition, but installing the Home CD works just fine (I think it was just an oversight on Microsofts part). If SFC isn't working on your system, I think a re-install is in order.

I am having basically the same problem. Newly built system with an ASUS P4S533 motherboard, ATI Radeon 8500 video card. System boots up, WindowsXP Home installs fine. However, as Jim notes, there is no Display listed in System Information / Components. The video driver listed is VGASave. I tried loading the lastest ATI video driver, but I get an error message: "INF Error. Video driver not found." I tried loading an updated driver for the monitor itself, but there is no option to change the driver from Display/Settings/Advanced/Monitor. I also loaded the latest AGP driver from the chipset manufacturer (Sis).
I have sent messages to ATI and ASUS, but so far have received no help. I may try the SFC suggestion from Hal. However, this is a brand-new system. It hasn't been exposed to any virus (besides I have installed anti-virus software). Please let me know if there is a solution. I am aging fast over this. John |
