Connect speed not accurate in tray

I was wondering if someone can tell me why my connect speed in windows 2000 Pro is never accurate on my tray. If I go into the properties of the modem and set it to connect at a certain speed it will show that in the tray. I have set it to 115200 bps and thats what it shows in the tray as my connect speed. or 57600 as thats also my connect speed. I never had this problem with Win98 so just wondering if anybody else has this problem. Thanks

Yes edrod13 this is a known problem, there are certain strings I believe you can try to force the modem to report the correct speed

I believe TwoRails has posted these in the past (or was it Cricket? I can't remember)

Perhaps you should PM them

Depends on the modem that you are using but most modems can be forced to report the true speed by using the commands listed here: http://www.56k.com/trouble/connect.shtml#dte

Well its a PCTEL 56k ( stop laughing it does the job) so I could not see those strings for my modem. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

This is a winmodem and it is reporting the port speed (115K)
Try restarting windows, this sometimes works. Otherwise dont worry about it.To paraphrase you. "..it does the job". Or add $100.00 and get a "hard modem" It will report the correct speed. There is no free lunch.

max speed on a dial up modem is 56k, but phone lines don't allow this kind of speed, consider your self lucky if you can connect at anything near 52k, as a adverage, it all depends on the phone line conditions in your area
