XP Pro: Error Check Utility Won't Run

Ive been having problems running the Error Check Tool for XP Pro. When I click on Error Check and then close out to restart my pc, the Error Check screen appears for only a few seconds with the message: "Windows cannot open volume for direct access" then it reboots back to the desktop.

I had problems with my Creative Audigy Gamer Software but I turned off the Splash Screen that was causing those problems as described here:
http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=38338
The "program is not responding" window is gone but Error Check still won't run normally.

I can only get Error Check to run if I go to the System Configuration Utility/Startup Tab. Then I have to check/uncheck any of the the startup items, and it doesn't matter which of these items I check or uncheck. I close out and click restart at the window telling me I have to restart in order for the changes to take place.

This is the only way to get Disk Check to run.

I checked Microsoft's Support web sight. Maybe I was looking in the wrong place but I could not find and articles listed that related to Error Check Troubleshooting.

Can anybody provide some suggections??

Thanks in advance.

The Disk Checker didn't work with me after a while and what I usually did was restart the computer in Safe Mode and then restart normally.

I would never have had realised that the SB Audigy software was causing the checker not to run as all of it had been disabled apart from the RcMan.exe file (as this controls my remote control).

You're saying the SB Audigy Software prevented Error Check to run on your pc too??

As far as Safe Mode goes, I tried running the Error Check from there but when it rebooted it gave the same "Windows cannot open volume" message.

I know it makes me shut down and reboot, then it runs on during the bootup process, takes a while but seems to do a thorough job. Did you try CHKDSK form commad prompt??

No, not yet. I'm still trying to figure out what's causing it to hang up. If all is working properly, it should just start running after bootup. I can get disk check to run, just not from the Tools menu.
