Last week I wanted to replay King's Quest VI. It's a DOS game and so I decided to run it in native DOS. So I installed in DOS and tried to run it. But it displayed a mesagge informing me that there wasn't enough memory to run it. I tweaked the config.sys several times to no avail, the message kept appearing. So I went to Win98 and tried to run it from there. The DOS window opened and the same message was displayed. GRR.
So, out of desperation I tried to run it from Win XP Pro RC1. To my amazement it ran! Funny thing is: a Windows version was also on the CD. That win version did run in 98 at 256 colors. But it refused to run in XP.

Yea, I still like a round or two of Duke Nukem 3D and it works fine under XP Home. Even old programs, I was wondering what my typing speed is so I dug out an old copy of Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing II that I have laying around and it ran fine even without switching to compatability mode.

XP and Win2k SP2 and above also come with a compatibility mode setting if a particular software doesnt work. You can set it to emulate a Win9x or a DOS system. Right click on the shortcut and go to Properties and on to the compatibility tab

The game doesnt know/care about the filesystem you are using, as long as it has access to all the files.
Logically, if games were picky about your filesystem most DOS games wouldnt run on most Win98 systems either .. cos those games were probably designed for FAT12/FAT16 whereas most people use FAT32. |

DOS games not running was my only concern about XP. Guess I'll be migrating soon, then. Thank you guys for shedding light on this.
