Adaptec/Roxio driver for XP Pro
I am confused mostly due to ignorance by all the info about XP regarding cdrw driver information. I am trying to set up my Omega cdrw with the drivers it needs for xp. It looks like Roxio wants me to by an upgrade for 60 bucks to get the 'free update for xp'. I tried updating from 3.02 to 3.04. I think it was the 04 that bought up and instablity warning. I have yet to see the cdrw drive in device manager or in My Computer. I would like to use the Adatec software only because I am familiar with it. Any body got some info about this? Is there a way to get the Easy CD creator update to xp without spending $60 to get it? I just want to cut some mp3 cds once in a while.
Doug

Hi Doug, I think you had to have version 5.0 to get the free update for XP without buying the newer version. Is this an external cdrw?

Hi James, Thanks for the comeback. It's an internal 12x10x32 I've had for a year or so. What do you think? Should I contact Roxio and see what they say? Does xp have some software for making audio cd's and data cds? I guess my main problem is windows is not seeing a drive for the cdrw. That's why I need a Roxio driver right?? I see you are into automotives. I've been a mechanic off and on in my life not certified though. Lately I have been doing nothing but R and R of Japanese crate engines in Hondas, Mitsubishis and Nissan. I am working on a 1990 Ply Lasar that has the 2 litre twin cam, 16 valve in it. Not sure it needs and engine yet. Got it at auction. Hope to hear from you.
By the way I had relatives in Silver City. They had a dude ranch outside of town there years ago. |

A friend of mine went thru the same thing and after three weeks of trying, he ended up paying for the update.

I think the legal way would be better....that'll keep Roxio from adding product activation to their software.

Doug, you say windows doesn’t see the cdrw drive at all? Then I think that there is something wrong with the configuration check you cables and jumper settings, but I would think windows would still see it as a cd-rom usually the burning software is what makes it a cdrw drive. I under stand the troubles of upgrading an OS and getting your software to work without spending any more money, but I’m going to recommend you take a look at Nero, it is in my opinion a lot better than Roxio and does have a wizard for easy burning as well as being very compatible with XP. XP does have burning support built in, but I have no dealings with it personally.
Yep, I’m a grease monkey, but trying hard to get out of that line of work while I still have my sanity. |

Ya, Jimmie, thanks. My zip drive and cdrw are on the secondary ide. They were both set to slave. Made the zip the master and bingo, "my computer" shows the drive. Ok, I will take a look at Nero. Tuf thinks its cool also. But does Nero have the xp drive i need to run this Iomega cdrw? Nero costs about 60 too, right?
Another thing, have you noticed the low prices on cdrw's these days? Can one get a new [and faster] cdrw say for $60 or so that comes with the xp drive? Thanks guys, Lets here from you. Doug aka hodunwun |

Doug, right now the best deal going is the LiteOn 40X12X48X from what others here at PCMech say it comes with Nero. My current burner is the LiteOn 32X12X40 it came with Nero and I have not had one problem with it since I installed it over 7 months ago and have burned well over 100 disks with it and never burned a coaster. newegg.com have them for $64.00+ shipping and that’s not a bad deal. In fact I will be getting one next month to go into my next build.

I went to the Iomega site and got on the xp support chat and talked with Sid. Hey ok. Told him I could not get the xp update from the roxio site to work. Also upgrading to 3.04 cd easy creator caused a corruption. He said roxio does not support versions 3x and 4x of the easy cd burner sofware for xp.
However, he sent me to a site to get "hotburn" driver file which supports xp. He said i was a good customer. Only have an Iomega zip drive the the cdrw drive. I am downloading it now. If this doesn't work I am going to newegg again to get the LiteOn. The question now is I have the website and is it legal to spread it around, that is, the website for the hotburn software???? Hey moderator, what say. Doug |

Hot Burn is not a bad program either, my wife and kids use it. It is really basic but it will burn a disc. It didn't list a lot of compatible drives last time I looked but it works fine on a Plextor that we have that is not listed.

No he was talking about d/l it from Iomega. Thats how got it. Of course I wasn't smart enough to call them first, I had to pay something like 30 dollars for it. But it's so simple my kid that's in the 4th grade burns good discs.
