Question XP and Zone Alarm Pro?

Ok, I got a network setup. 1 machine with 2000 pro and the other with XP pro my 2000 machine has Zone Alarm pro on it and when I click on computers near me on the XP box my 2000 pro box isnt there and i cant access the printer. But I can run lan games on both PC's and surf the web no problem at all. I was wondering if Zone Alarm is causing my XP box not to see my 2000 box and also not allowing my XP box to use the printer. Im using a LinkSys 4 port router(BEFSR41 Model). Also when i click on computers near me on my 2000 pro box i see both PC's but I go to access my XP box and it tells me " \\Wife is not accessible, The network path was not found"? I was just wondering if ZA was causing my little headache.....lol. TY Captn

The problem is in the 3.0 version. It tries to do way too much. In my opinion the 2.6 to 3.0 "upgrade" is a serious downgrade in quality. I'd uninstall the newest version and switch to 2.6 or whatever the old version was.

When I networked my 2 home computers, one running ZoneAlarm on WinMe and the other using BlackIce on WinMe. To get file and printer sharing to work I had to turn off BOTH firewalls.

More than likely the problem is in the configuration of your firewall I’m running ZA Pro 3.0.133 on my PC and others on the network are using ZA Pro 2.6.362 and I have no problems with file or print sharing. You will more than likely need to add the IP’s of the other PC’s in the configuration of ZA as a trusted IP.

All I use for a firewall is my router. Not sure everyone would agree but it works well for me.

There are too many settings in ZAPro that could be causing yor problem for me to even bother giong through them all, make sure your Local Zone Settings are configured correctly (not just having the addresses there alone), also check all your advanced settings. If you like you can email ZoneLabs, they have decent tech support. If you paid you will be of higher priority to them, but if you didn't you will still get help.

Good luck

I had used Zone Alarm since it first came out, and it was great until I upgraded to 3.0, and XP. Now, if I leave it on for any length of time, I can't access the Internet until I turn it off, and then back on. 3.0 is a disaster with XP. I moved to Agnitum Outpost, and never looked back. The are offering the Pro version at a discount of $19.99, a 50% discount if you migrate from the pro version of another firewall. They also have a free version.

Cool I got the skinny on some firewall probs and WinXP

1. IF you had your firewall still installed when you upgraded to WinXP and it's screwy now, try completely removing your firewall and reinstall it.
You may have to delete files and even specific Registry keys becuz you broke the uninstaller.

2. There's a specific problem with ZA 3.0 and XP. It can freeze whenever it asks the user whether is whould grant a new application Internet access. An update in March should fix this problem. (Should find it on their site)

3. Some popular firewall's first WinSP-compatible versions are BlackICE 2.9, McAfee Firewall 3.0, Norton Firewall 2002 and ZA 2.6.357

My ZA Pro started screwing up on a clean install. The problem was the same as in the old installation. Tech support was no help. I suspect it was a problem with my satellite software. I purchaced ZA Pro when it first came out, and paid again to update to 3.0. That kind of pissed me off anyway, because I was supporting them all along with the Pro version when everyone else was using the free version. I expect any updates to be an improvement, and from the beginning, it was a step back. No thanks, they don't get a second chance. They went from a simple intuitive format to an overbloated format that was not as good as the old format.

Ummm both home and pro have a built in fwall that is better than za. They do statefull inspection, as in the content of each packet is checked, unlike any(?) version of za. The other diff is that the ms fwall is one way, allowing any outbound comms, but denying unwanted inbound. Mine passes grc's test with full "stealth".. Only fails due to the "trojan" test. This is not a problem if you have no spyware/trojan in your box. I would think it safe to say there will be no more stable fwall than the native ms.

Try Sygate or TPF (Tiny Personal Firewall-which is VERY congigurable). They are much better.

I've tried Sygate, and Tiny is not quite in the league of ZA and Outpost. You should try them all, but I'm betting you will like Outpost better.

Unless the latest update to Outpost has fixed this problem you need to remove absolutely every reference to Zonealarm before installing Outpost. Check the Agnitum support and forums for details.

I installed mine on a clean install of XP, but Zone Labs has a very detailed section on uninstallation. Basically you update to the latest version, and use it's uninstaller. They also list all of the files, so you can make sure they are all off of your system.

Just to add,
I think ZAPro is a great firewall for XP.
