UDF in 2K
I have a win2k machine with a Pioneer 16x DVDrom. Currently it will only read DVD's and CDr. Before the upgrade to Win2k, it was reading CDRW just fine. Now, when I open the folder for the drive with a CDRW, it's blank. I know the drive is ok. I've tried reinstalling the driver, and removing the drive...nothing seems to help. Anyone have any ideas??

The inability to read UDF is a known problem. Do not try to fix the CDRW media under Windows 2000, you will still not be able to read the data without the Service Pack fix. ---------- BTW, what the heck is with the other long post??? |

Roxio may work
The Roxio UDF reader may work, but you should still get Service Pack 3.
The Roxio UDF reader overwrites the Windows 2000 reader which allows you to read, but doesn't correct the other problems which SP 2 or 3 correct. |

Security, bug fixes, etc
If you go to the Microsoft website and look at all the fixes that the Service Packs incorporate, you will understand. There are too many to casually mention a few. Many of them affect system security with integration of previous fixes to help secure your system and IE against intrusion and other security problems.

But that has nothing to do with UDF, does it ?
With UDF you only need a UDF reader. So Dan, you installed the UDF reader and it works. That's all you need. No need to install a service pack because of UDF. There are other reasons to do it, but an UDF reader was all you need. RJ

Some time ago, in a galaxy far away . . .
Actually, over a year ago, before Adaptec spun of DirectCD and when MS actually kept their info, MS discouraged the overriting of the MS UDF reader by the Adaptec/Roxio version and recommended using SP2 while Adaptec/Roxio caution user of their UDF reader with Windows 2000.
Even after Roxio had all the DirectCD software and UDF reader, they continued to have disclaimers to using it with Windows 2000. Apparently they've changed, but I hadn't checked their site recently. Sure, you don't need SP2 or 3 to correct the UDF problem, but there are many other critical and important security fixes that are more important than UDF read capability. Since the original poster didn't have UDF capability, I knew they didn't have either SP2 or SP3, thus the recommendation for greater system security too. It only makes sense to protect systems, not just fix the current problem. (Proactive vs reactive?) |

I just installed Servicepack 3 - I've never installed any servicepacks before - and once more - I have to ask - what for -- nothing has changed - with the installation of Service pack 3 - or at least not that I notice..
I think if you have to download a 129Mb file to upgrade the OS - because of security issues - or whatever - then something must be wrong - I use this very version of Win2k here since it had birthday in february 2000 - and now still it never caused any problem - upgraded only IE - from all the betas throughout the retail version.. I caugth a virus once - but as soon I received I got it right there and took care of it.. If someone has to fix a OS with a 129mb file - then something has to be wrong either with the update itself or the OS - choose either one - for me is clear that there isn't much need to update upgrade installing Service packs as long your computer runs OK - I also have Nero 5.5, Easy CD Creator 5.0 and some other burning programs installed here - no problems whatsoever.. Next thin I will try if is - if I install a second CDburner if I can burn with both of them at the same time but use a different program - .. like to know this one.. Hpro |

The network download is larger than the detected update
Here's the MS information on the UDF problem: http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q268094
So if you download the network version (which is what I always do) you get the 129MB version. If you let your OS check from the MS list, it will dynamically update over the Internet and only update what is needed. As for fixes, all OS's have fixes. MS packs all of their multiple fixes into service packs for consolidation. Other OS's do the same, so if you use Solaris, you will eventually need to untar a larger fix/patch or just apply the individual fixes/patches you want. How does Linux get fixes? Don't they get updated kernels to fix security? Microsoft is writing their OS for comaptibility with x86 code, 16 and 32 bit code and 64 bit newer code on different hardware and vendor platforms, chipsets, video cards, peripherals, etc. Diversity of systems makes for complexity of testing and debugging more difficult. So while Sun can determine Solaris fixes/patches more easily because of stringent hardware requirements, (MS can do so also), MS chooses to support the widest range of devices for user choice of hardware and software. You are right however, many of the fixes below will not affect your system, but others might. So here's an example of some SECURITY fixes for Windows. I agree, after dling the 129mb file and installing it I, too, find no real notice in the way things run...oh well, at least I've got the latest and greatest for win2k!! |

I've had no problem with my other machines (all running win98se), but with the addition of a win2k machine I've run into a few problems that have come about just from the difference of protocols. I have the identical DVD in my other machines and have never had problems reading cdr or cdrw. I guess because we are such creatures of habit, even the smallest change in the way we operate creates symptoms of what I call the "preconceived idea syndrome"... If you have DirectCD or InCD or any other packet writer installed, you won't even need the UDF reader. If the machine doesn't have a burner, of course these would not be installed and you would need some kind of UDF reader, be it MS or Roxio or Ahead, whatever works for you.

right you are glc,
I have burners/software in my other systems...this new box is still waiting for my decision on the dvd-r vs. dvd+r issue. I'm certain once I put some sort of burner in, the udf won't be needed. 'till then this works fine. thanks again all for all the input here..... |
