Cool

You can download the same from M$.

The above is faster than the premier site.

I installed it yeasterday. So far it seems pretty transparent. This computer seems to connect to my network a little faster. I think I may be seeing a little better drive performance also. I don't have any benchmarks to compare with so I guess I'll never know for sure. It feels a little quicker though.

Just installed it and so far so good. The one change I like is the "Set Program Access and Defaults" in the Add/Remove Programs applet.

I noticed that too bailey.... the system, while it ran good before, seems a bit snappier now.

While there may be some bugs with SP1, the idea is that is that it fixes a lot of known bugs. I'm gonna wait to put it on my workstations for a while. I have put it on my email/office/internet machine and my laptop. They both run better now. They didn't seem to have any problems before. My wireless connection off my notebook is noticeably faster cruising around my LAN.

One fix that I have noticed is the problem I had with IE not being able to clear the history files without manually deleting the history files, now seems to be fixed. As far as speed, it seems as though some features like disk management loads faster and is a lot more responsive.

Sweet. gotta try it.

But the final wasn't supposed to be released until today (Sep. 9th) wasn't it?? I want a final version on my machine, are you guys sure that is final that you are using? The microsoft site says nothing about the SP1 on their site, usually SP's get announced on the front page, am I missing something.

(it's 3:00 in the morning on the 9th right now, I'll go check again....)

I'm going on the assumption that it's a final -- didn't say a word about it being beta.

I've really not noticed my systems being 'snappier' or quicker. And the funniest thing -- it made me re-activate after installation. What was that all about? Had to dig through all kinds of stuff before I found the activation key.

Craig: They've added new features to prevent pirated copies of WinXP from being upgraded to SP1.

Under the "Service Pack 1 Changes to Product Activation" section.

I went to Microsoft.com at 10 a.m. this morning GMT, and SP1 wasn't there. Just been back now (11 p.m.) and SP1 is now there.

I went there for critical updates as i have had to use the Recovery disc on the computer to put it back to the start. I was only getting 2.15Kb download, so gave up.

I noticed that if you try to get it at the Updates page it is only 30mb's. There is another link there for the full 133mb d/l.

I think the one in the third post here might be the one, however my url was a bit longer when I finally found it at the MS site.

Anyway, the 32bit version is 133mb, and for the 64bit version of XP it is 199mb's.

(*edit*)
the third post up there is the one I found. It was the final version all along.

Anyway, I am almost done downloading it. It is very slow... only 30kb a second. About half what I usually get. (Must be swamped)

I had to reset my router but thats the only change I had to make. Funny OUtlook could still check mail but other than that I had no internet access. I didn't have to change any settings just a quick reset worked for me.

Hmm.. I just read over some instructions and it says that installing SP1 over windows without reinstalling windows is not recommended. Is this true?

My Internet also stopped working after I installed the SP1. I Found out my Norton Internet security 2002 no longer worked! I had to reinstall it now everything works fine.

Iwouldn't think so since it is available from Windows Update. I haven't seen what you read. But if you reinstall windows you have to reinstall SP1.

I think what he meant was, "the correct" way to do the SP1 installation is over a fresh install of Windows.

I don't recall seeing that posted anywhere, but I didn't read much into the instructions besides what the major fixes were.

It was a trouble free installation for me and I have had no ill effects since. I wonder if the IE6 SP1 is actually included, because I downloaded it separately and, even after installing SP1 for XP, IE6 SP1 found one download that I needed. hmmm,...

oh well, all is good.
