Cool XP Partition size

I messed up first of year. Only made my XP partition 4G. Went to install SP1 today and there wasn't enough room to archive files first. Partition 1 "C" is 2G and has WIN98 and I am willing to part with it. Partition 2 "D" is 4G and has XP. Partition 3 "E" has 12G and contains programs, data files, ect and has 10.5G free.

Is there a easy way to give 2 or more G to "D", either by getting rid of "C" or robbing from "D"? I don't have any utilities like Partition Magic.
Chas

Without reinstalling XP on a bigger partition the only way is to use Partitions Magic or similar partitioning tool.

If all you have is XP on the four GB Partition you might be able to gain some room temporarily by deleting some of your system restore files, emptying the recyling bin and moving your swap file to another pertition. You can also disable hibernation and delete the hiberfil.sys file and gain an amount equal to the amount of RAM you have installed.
Other than that you either Start over or use an 3rd party utility.

Cool

Thanks Jimmie and Tuf. That's what I thought, I was hoping that with XP's enhanced disk management there might be a way to rellocate some space from "E" or delete "C". Guess I will get everything moved over and running on wife's PC and start over.

Just hate the thought of it. I'm a parnoid type with this thought that something won't load or I won't be able to get network working again.

If you are getting rid of 98 on that drive, get rid of it (format) and then set the swapfile on the same drive 98 came off of. Then set the drive with xp on it to no swap. That may give you enough room for the upgrade. I'm no fan of partition apps....

I suppose it's not too comforting but the more you do it the better you will get at it. lol

Cool

Yea I know. I have a bunch of parts that I have been buying from time to time. Probably when the weather turns bad I will put a PC together and load up XP. Once I get my application software running on it, I'll start over with this one. That's my main concern. I have a contracting business and sure don't want to screw up my invoice data this close to EOY and tax filing. May even wait till after first of year and information is turned over to the accountant. After all XP has been running this long without SP1.

Will probably overkill and set the XP partition to 8G.

Thanks all
Chas
