I need some help with my WIndows 98 start up. There are some messages whenever I start it up. Among other things, there are corrupting or missing short cut errors and Ftp prompt comes up automatically as well as not pad. I tried to use Scanreg, file checker, scandisk, and it seems that the registry is good. Is there any bright idea to fix this.

Some places to check could be your autoexec.bat file, likely there are entries there that are no longer needed. Put a rem in front of the lines that seem to be related to your errors, Then there is your startup tab, found by going to Start>Run, and typing msconfig in the run box, and clicking OK! This brings up your configuration utility, and look at the startup tab, uncheck anything not needed. Leave scanreg alone though. And what about your startup thing under programs, take any unnecessary entries out of there also.

Hi kenny3o,
Also check the Windows Startup folder for anything unusual and remove it. You may want to do a full system scan for viruses, spyware and trojans. Cricket
