funny file names

Please help

I uninstalled winME from my lap top which has a bugged acdrom. the c drive still has the names of files and directories but its in funny characters and with no extensions.

please help to retrieve these documents.

Are you going to reinstall your OS from a recovery disk? Not sure what you mean by a bugged cd-rom?

If the file name is corrupted, what about the contents? Did you try to copy the file to another computer and open it?

See if there are any trial/free downloads from fixit utilities/ontrack.
They have a file undeleter that can regain a whole formatted os for you if you do your part. It helps to know the file extensions.
