Question What do you lose?

I've not tried this before but what would happen if you have a problem with a W2K computer and re install W2K over this existing os.
Do you lose all programs
Do you lose files and settings, what would be lost ???

do you mean like do an upgrade over it, or just completely reinstall?
the upgrade type probably won't fix any problems.
a complete reinstall will save all of your files, but many programs will not run, and most of your file settings (ntfs) will be lost, since they are actually saved by the os. that was my experience with it, anyway.

The first thing you want to do if the OS is giving you problems is boot with the 2K CD and do a repair. This may fix it.

yea, run a repair first. i sort of just assumed you had done that.

accounts are not retained. they must be recreated.

Assuming you have already backed up all your data and that the repair thing didn't work...

If you are using MS Word, be sure to backup the Personal.dic and the Normal.dot in case you have made mods to the way Word looks, and if you have added words to the ortography dictionary.

Ironically orthography is another type of dictionary I wasn't aware of.
