SP1 for XP is out.

I'm about to go download it off the updates site but for some reason, I can't scan for updates off the site? I'm currently waiting now for the '0%' to load. Is it suppose to stay that 0% and then pop up to 100%? Because I've been waiting for like 2 minutes and I'm on cable so I don't know why it's so slow. Thanks.

There' probably thirty million people trying to download it. The final release has been out for a week or more. There should be many alternative places to get it from. The full download is 133MB. You can download it. It will install what you need then you can delete the original download or save it to CD should you ever need it again. I think from what I read the Windows Update download is around 40MB and then the installer downloads just what you need. So in theory the Windows Update version should be faster. Right now though with everyone trying to download it at once I'm not surprised it is slow. You might try searching this site for the link to download the full package. It will probably be faster as most people probably don't know about it.

Note of caution!!!
If you have ANY illegal MS software on your system, don't get SP1.
It will render the system useless, and require a format/reinstall.
I realize that all us PCMecher's are all running legal copies of everything, so this shouldn't be a problem, right?

Not that I have any illegal ms products (god forbid) but how would Mr Gates possibly know?

I mean office, windows and the like just come with the serial number that came with the box and nothing else to identify them as not being legal??

There's any number of things in the registry identifying MS products. Installing SP1 checks for them, and if the s/n or something isn't right...

I only have 2 ms products, xp and office. You guys know that there's a person out there probably at this moment trying to make a patch for ilegal users to run SP1 properly right? There's about a very few distinct users who actually take pride into out smarting Gates. Dunno whats so fun about that.

They way I understand it SP1 just checks your license for XP. It's only looking for a few corporate licenses that have been badly abused. If it identifies those keys SP1 will not install. The idiots running illegal copies won't be able to go to Windows Update any more anyway. It doesn't say anything about hosing your system. I have heard and read these rumours and our M$ rep said it's not true. They are basically looking for those particular keys.

SP1 disables 4 recognized corp keys and prevents future updates. it does not render your PC unuseable.

Like devilsown key. That guy is funny. I saw a picture of him holding the XP disk 30 days before the official release of XP. Lol.
