need to synchronise
Hi there,
I have a desktop and laptop machine (both win XP) which I use regularly. I need to synchronise documents and outlook (and periodically emails) between the two every evening when I get home and then when I leave in the morning. I used to use laplink gold 11, but since I have upgraded it is locking up my laptop. I am therefore looking for other options. I have my computers networked, so speed is not an issue - I just need an elegant way of synchonising the files and folders. What program would you guys recommend? Also, in terms of outlook synchronisation, I have been exporting my pst folder, transferring it over, then importing it on the target computer. This has always seemed a bit unwieldy - does anyone know a better way? Thanks very much in advance, Matt. |

You might want to give PCAnywhere a try. It is mostly used as remote control software, but I also use it to sync my desktop and laptop. You can set it to sync specified files automatically.
Hope this helps. |

Depending on which version of Outlook you have there are different options. I use Outlook 2000 and there is no good way to do it unless you are using echange server. But if you are like me and using POP3 email we are kinda left out in the dark. I have set up a briefcase that synchs all of my Outlook folders except the Inbox. I haven't found any good way to do it.
Microsoft has a bunch of tips on the office site. There are several third party utilities available but none that meet my needs that I'm aware of. If you are using Outlook 2002 (XP) I think you have more options at least most the articles on M$ site relate to it. |

Thanks very much,
I'll give the trial version of pcanywhere a try, but it seems a a bit over-featured and expensive for my needs. Anyone know of a good dedicated synchronisation package that they've used and like? I had a nasty feeling that would be the case with outlook - it seems amazing that they could overlook something as findamental as synchronisation. I have 2002 and it doesn't seem to offer any significant synch options over 2000, but I will check the site. If anyone has found a plug-ins or workarounds that work better, let me know cheers, Matt. |
