Unhappy CD rom problems

Please help me... I have an Everex 98 ME
my cd rom has quit working. you have to put the cd in sometimes over 30 times before it will run. And often it will open and close by itself over an over. Which is hard to get cd out or in! In system check it says it is running ok. Also if I put the cd cleaner in this starts up right away and works to clean it! I use Windows Media Player. And I have the box check to start cds when inserted. I don't know if restoring will help as I don't know how far back to go as this has been going on for long time and getting worse today. I would hate to loose all my up-grades and previous files.
thank you.. meineherr @tir.com

May be a bad or dirty CD-Rom and those CD Cleaners are almost worthless for cleaning the Laser lense and can actually damage it. Also does this happen with disks like the original windows disk or other hardware disks or does it just happen with CD-R type disks.

Hi meineherr,

Could be the CD-ROM drive is dying. Try that drive in another PC to see if the symptoms are still there. Then try another CD-ROM drive in your PC. If the other CD-ROM drive works in your PC but your CD-ROM drive doesn't work in another PC, it's time to get a new CD-ROM drive.

Newegg.com has 52x Sony CD-ROM drives for $24.
