File sharing problem on 98
A few days ago I installed Win 98 onto a new computer I had built. Once I had the computer hooked up with my router and had the intenet up and running after a bit of a battle with the system (see below) I realized there was no network neighborhood icon on the desktop. I also couldn't find the network setup wizard either. So i went to another computer and made a network setup disk. I used it on this system, but there is still no icon and I can't figure out how to access files from other computers, even though I have the same protocols and such setup on this computer that I have on all others I am using. What should I do? any help is appreciated.
"below" - I have trouble installing drivers for 98, ie with my network card it kept asking for the Win 98 disk, so i would insert one (i have two), it still wouldnt find any of the files, so i would try again with the other disk. I had the same problem on a laptop i bought off of ebay.. is there some solution to this problem? it's annoyed be beyond belief as now I have error messages at startup since there are regisrty and/or system.ini references to these files. Some of which i was able to delete, but others i cant find where they are referenced, so they still come up. How can i get these drivers to install fully? should I just buy xp? |

sometimes when it asks for a win98 disk, what it really wants is the disk with the drivers on it for the hardware you are trying to install (network card). Give it a try.

yeah, i put in all three (two win 98 cds and the nic driver cd itself) and none worked. I also saw in the manual for 98 install if it asks for the cd you can just tell it to look in c:\windows\bin or something... i tried that and it didnt work, I also searched for some of the files it was looking for to see if they were anywhere else on the computer.

Did you by any chance install TweakUI? That will hide/show desktop items such as Network Neighborhood according to your selections from a list. So it might be installed, but hidden.
You could also try downloading RegClean or RegMaid from the Microsoft download site. Either one will do: RegClean works with very little input on your part, while RegMaid lets you select from a list. That will at least clear up your system having to ask for files is doesn't need/doesn't have. After that, you could try uninstalling and re-installing your network card. Seems like after setting it up you should see Network Neighborhood. Do you have a customized desktop using Active Desktop? (...are you displaying webpages & such continuosly?...if so, try the "show destop" button & see if you can see Network Neighborhood) . . . Gary |
