Is it safe to remove the C:\Windows\Temp folder in XPHome??
I have never done it before. It contains files immediately after XP installation, and I am not sure if I will need them again or not. The folder that is there right after XP installation is here: C:\Windows\Temp\Remove In that folder there are a bunch of other folders with these names: Win95Cur Win95Old Win98 Win98SE Win2000 WinME XP Those folders all contain various .INF files. Also, NOT inside the remove folder, but STILL inside the C:\Windows\Temp folder there is a .CAT file and an .inf file. The .CAT file opens something called the "Security Catalog" and The .INF file contains a little info concerning my Intel chipset. What are all those files and folders for?? Can all these folders be safely deleted? Has anyone else deleted them without any ill effects? I am just wondering if I can obtain a little extra space on my harddrive... |

*update*
I just noticed all those files inside the "Remove" folder pertain to the Intel Chipset as well. But still they are .inf files. Do I need those for functionality, or are they just for my own reference?? Also, what is the Security Catalog in XP?? Do I need that? |

Hi DilLy,
Did you upgrade to WinXP Home from an earlier OS? Normally, anything in a Temp folder can be safely deleted...but if you aren't sure or don't feel comfortable about removing them, just leave the contents there. Deleting or removing the wrong folders or files can give you a system that refuses to function properly or a system that won't start up. The safest thing to do is to just leave the folder alone. If you have a fairly large hard drive, you don't have to worry about it taking up space. If there is a readme file in there somewhere, try reading it to see if that folder is safe to remove. Cricket

Dump it. Delete it, or at least everything in it.
It's duplicates of things that are now in c:\windows\system and system32. |
