Remove XP upgrade and clean install XP
Since I upgraded from '98 to XP Home it has been one problem after another. Having a power surge and getting the "blue screen of death" didn't help either. I've decided to get rid of the upgrade version and install a fresh version of XP Home.
I'm unsure of what I need to do in order to do this. I think it means reformatting and partitioning the hard drive and that's when my lack of knowledge on this matter tells me to seek your expert advice. Thanks in advance for your help! |

If your cdrom supports booting then just boot to the cdrom and run the XP setup. If this is an XP upgrade cd then you will need to have your 98 cd ready to put into your cdrom when the setup asks for it. Follow the instructions for installing a new installation, the setup will detect the existing XP install and ask if you want to repair or install a new at this point choose a new install. Next it will ask where to install and at this point you will need to delete the partition where the old install was installed (which is very easy just follow the screen instruction) once you have deleted the partition you’ll need to create a new one, once again just follow the on screen instructions and create the partition. Then select the partition XP is to be installed and choose to install XP by pressing enter. At the next screen you will be offered to format the partition, the file format is up to you, but it is recommended to use NTFS and I will recommend you skip the quick format option, as it does not provide error checking. From this point it is all down hill. Installing XP really is not too difficult just don’t forget to delete the partition and format and you should be fine.

well its very simple, all u have to do is set your first boot to cd in ur bios then u put ur xp cd in and boot from cd then basicly it will give u instructions on wat to do, then u will go and delete your partion that u have your 98/xp on and create a new partion for your xp then u will install xp on that partion ( choose ntfs )then it will format that partion as for your files and stuff ( i dont know exactly how u will do it ) u can put on another partion , creat partion then leave it ( format later when your OS is up ) then u can put stuff on that partion after u format it * remeber to backup your stuff before u do any of this * also how many gigs u have in ur hdd ? give at least 10 gigs for xp dats how much i give about its not needed that much but a little more is OK then u can decide how much u wanna put for the other partions and how many partions

The upgrade will be the same as the full version the only difference is that you have to have a quilfiying product eg: a copy of windows 98/ME to use the upgrade.

Well, I tried to delete the old partition and I get this - Setup is unable to perform the requested operation on the selected partition. This partition contains temporary setup files that are required to complete the installation. Any ideas? Thanks for your help.

I tried Delpart and that didn't work. I would like to clear both HD's and start over but, I don't know how.

Delpart has to be run from a bootdisk - any old Win9x bootdisk will work fine.

I'm really feeling duuuuuumb now. Any idea why my keyboard is dead? Properties tells me it is working properly. I'm beginning to think my computer has more bugs in it than an" Orkin Pest Control "commercial.
