Temp Folder

How do I delete files in the Temp folder under c:\documents and settings\user\local settings\temp. I can obviously delete them like any others, but I want to know if there's another way?

just do what I do. I do a search for all *.tmp files on the root of the drive and subfolders and delete all files prior to that day. So if you do a search today, I would delete any file made before 9/13

well how did those .exe files get in there? You have to ask yourself that. See the whole point of a temp folder is for temporary files, which means most apps remove the files from the folder when it's done with what it's written to do. Then there are those apps that leave traces behind, hence the *.exe file(s) and need to be cleaned. Let's put it this way, if it's in temp you shouldn't need to worry. Just clear all the files in the folder. I doubt you will do any serious if any harm to the PC.

I run XP, it was the Roxio's GoBack that causes the problem. I installed System Works just now and it's fine.

Did you install GoBack?

I tried the Norton Clean Sweep and it still didnt clean the Temp folder

now I'm talking about the c:\documents and settings\user\local settings\temp folder, not the c:\windows\temp

I always just delete everything in the folder, non TMP files and all. In fact, that's part of my script I run to back up my important data: I backup my C:\Documents and Settings\User folder, but first I delete everything in the temp file so I am not backing up unnecessary garbage. So far I have not had a single problem. If it is in a temp folder, you can delete it.

Nothing of value is in your temp folders if you have closed all applications or rebooted. M$ Office programs sometimes store versions of working files. If you have saved the document or closed the app and rebooted they are no longer needed.

You could always put a shortcut of that folder on your desktop so that you do not have to dig for it every time. Then with the folder open click edit, click select all then delete. There is also disk cleanup under accessories, but I think that only cleans out the general temp folder. The one you mention is tied to the user profile. So, the shortcut to the folder might be the easiest way.
