Sounds like a pirated copy of XP. True?

No...not true. Dell had XP preloaded on the computer when it was purchased.

My sincere apologies. It is a classic symptom.
Did you register the copy? Did you try to install the XP update and the IE update at the same time? |

I'm not sure if he registered or not, and yes, he did try to do them both at once. Being on a dialup, he gave up waiting on it and went to bed.

I think you may have to reinstall both. The instructions warn against installing both at the same time.

If that is a Dell OEM than you won't have to have it registered. My XP came installed on my New Dell Demension 8200 and after getting a virus that my virus scan could not remove, I decided to do a complete re-install of the operatin system. Not once during or after install did it ask for me to register or activate my copy.
Unistall both updates and download do one at a time. if that doesn't work try a system restore. If all else fails I suggest a complete re-install of XP.

This from the current LangaList Newletter:
"For example, Windows Update flags SP1 as an "exclusive" item that must be installed by itself. But one reader tried to bypass that warning when Update offered him both Service Pack 1 and a separate patch for IE6. Both were listed as items that must be installed by themselves, one at a time; and Update even flashed a warning in red letters about installing SP1 by itself. But he short-circuited the installation process and tried to install both patches, fooling the Update agent into skipping a necessary reboot in between; and his system got rather badly hosed in the process. Fortunately, this reader had good backups, and so was able to restore his system. Ironically, Service Pack 1 also includes the IE6 patches, so installing SP1 alone, as the instructions state, not only would have prevented his system from getting hosed, but would have prevented his need to download and install the separate IE6 patch" |
