My geuss is that you will have to contact Microsoft via phone to transfer ownership, at least that is what I would do.

If you want to change the name on a computer that has an existing install you can do that with the registry. If you are using a copy that has been used on another computer and has been removed you can just install it and activate it. It may or may not prompt you to call Microsoft. If's it a retail copy I don't think you'll have any problems. If it originally was an oem copy I think Microsoft won't let you activate it.
When in doubt asking Microsoft is not a bad thing to do. They have always been very helpful when I have contacted them.

Interesting.

Yes, it's installed on a box I bought from a friend (an old Compaq). He upgraded then decided to get a new box. (No, I couldn't convince him to build his own.)

I'll (re)install the OS on a differenct machine (a spare parts build and 2nd client for me), and Restore the Compaq to the original OS to give to a family member.

Since I'll have to call MS anyway, I find out then...

Thanks!

Hi bailey,

I'll keep a link to this thread so I can do just that! Please note that the spare box (yet to be built) is a spare time thing, so I post as soon as I get it up and running.

Heck, it took me over a month to get my wife's box built do to my crazy schedule of late. Heck, I'm even thinking about waiting for the AMD 2600+ to come out in force to upgrade this box and put this 1800+ in the other box.

But, I will post back !!

If it's been over 120 days since he activated it it's likely you can just install and reactivate. You should have no problems.
