browser problem

I use IE 6
I was viewing a webpage when my computer shut off (I assumed it was due to the weather we are having, but none of my digital clocks went out?!?). When I powered back up, to my surprise scandisc did not run. Now my browser is not able to connect to any websites. I can get my mail, and when I ran the live update for Norton I connected to their site ok. I am currently operating another pc on my network, sharing the modem in the problem pc. So, the modem must be ok, and the internet connection is ok. I tried repairing IE through add/remove programs....still no luck
any other suggestions??

Hi Dan

Is that a cable modem, DSL, or dialup?

What did Norton LiveUpdate use to connect - IE6 or a third-party software (like roadrunner, AOL, Compuserve, Prodigy, etc...)?

Seems like you might want to run ScanDisk just to be sure files on the drive haven't been damaged (a "thorough" test).

Are you getting error messages when you can't reach websites? What do they say?

You can also double-check your Security and Privacy settings in IE6 to see if they've been altered.

Since you visited LiveUpdate, can I assume the system scan came up clean?

Some connection problems have involved first-time connections after installing IE6 while running Norton Personal Firewall. The solution MS gives for that one is to reinstall the firewall. Not sure if that would apply to you, since you were Already running IE6. . .

I usually run IE6 repair from the Tools menu of System Information, but I suppose running it from Add/Remove does the same thing.

I'll check back a bit later to see if you've had any luck

thanks GR-
I did run scandisc
the message I get when I try to connect to a website is "page cannot be displayed" I've tried over 20 sites, get the same message...
I've also been through all my internet settings, no problem.
Adaware got rid of an "Alexa" registry entry but the problem persists....
tried reinstalling IE6 to no avail....\
this one is a real "stinka"

Hmmm - what about temporarily setting your LAN connection in IE to let it "autodetect network settings"...? (assuming you're not using dialup)

If you're running Win9x, you could also try a run of RegMaid or RegClean (or of course if you run WinME, you can try System Restore if you have a restore point available from before the power out). [...and RegClean & RegMaid are available at the MS download site]

If I see anything else that rings a bell, I'll let you know. . . seems like I saw something a lot like your post a few months ago....

My memory isn't as fresh as it used to be

thanks again
problem solved:
I ran: scanreg /regrestore at "C" prompt...
restored the registry to a couple days ago and now I have use of my browser again...
I guess I will really never know what happened...if I don't have more problems from this...who cares???!!

Nice work, Dan

My guess is that the abrupt power out corrupted a setting in your Registry, which you fixed when you restored.
