How big is Windows XP?
Just out of curiosity, I've been thinking about installing WinXP on the new HDD I'm going to get, just to see how it works and how to use it, since many new comps now come with it. It would probably be a good thing to explore, with what I do.
Anyway, I was wondering how much HDD space it takes up and how much RAM it needs (128MB, minimum, right?). Also, how to partition the drive in NTFS for winXP and FAT32 for win98 2nd ed. Can I do that with Fdisk?

The minimum hardware requirements for Windows XP Home Edition are:
Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended) At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended) At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive Keyboard and a Microsoft Mouse or some other compatible pointing device Video adapter and monitor with Super VGA (800 x 600)or higher resolution Sound card Speakers or headphones For more information about system requirements for Windows XP Home Edition, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/h...on/sysreqs.asp The minimum hardware requirements for Windows XP Professional include: Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended) At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended) At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive Keyboard and a Microsoft Mouse or some other compatible pointing device Video adapter and monitor with Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher resolution Sound card Speakers or headphones For more information about system requirements for Windows XP Professional, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p...on/sysreqs.asp Last edited by larry1135; 09-15-2002 at 07:32 PM. |

Setup will allow you to partition/format...then will go into the setup.

In the real world, it takes 256M of RAM to run acceptably. The minimum processor I would use is around 400Mhz. About a GB or Hard drive space to start off, which shouldn't be an issue. If you are going to set it up to dual boot, install 98 first and leave an empty partition for XP. 98 will have to be installed on the C: partition. Use Fdisk to setup 2 partitions, then install 98 and tell XP to install on your next partition.

I agree with mairving you should have a minimum of 256MB ram and 400Mhz processor for XP to run well. Since force_flow2002 is getting a new hard drive size should not be an issue. I had heard that there is an issue with doing a 98/XP dual boot so, you may want to research the MS site with that one.

I'm gonna third it here. 256Mb should be the minimum that you consider, 512 runs really smooth.

This may be a bit redundant, but 256Mb’s of ram is what I suggest to be a minimum and 512Mb’s for a smooth ride with XP. For HDD space I suggest a minimum of 5Gb’s for the partition that you intend to install XP on if you have the space give it 10Gb’s. XP is not only a resource hog, but it is also a hog with HDD space as well.

Once you use XP you won't go back to 9X. Give it as much space as you can and lots and lots of RAM!

I gave XP a 4G partition and that was a big mistake. I'm out of space after 9 months and cain't install SP1. I've ordered Partition Magic hoping to increase partition size. I would give it a minimum of 6G. I plan to increase the XP partition to 8G personally.

Thanks everyone!
![]() I'm getting 256MB RAM, AMD Athlon XP 1900+ 1.6GHz, and 80GB HDD, so that should be adiquite, I think. As to partitioning, there one question that was not answered: How to partion to have NTFS (for XP) and FAT32 (for win 98). Thanks!
