MS Outlook & MS Messenger....why do I need both.

Anyone know why Outlook needs MS Messenger? Everytime I use outlook , messenger shows up in the tray and I'm sick of seeing it. I know I can get rid of it permanantly through tweaking, but does outlook require messenger?

Also, what e-mail programs is everyone else using? I used to use Pegasus a long time ago but switch to outlook for some it's functionality. Anyone ever use The Bat!? IS it any good? Just looking for alternatives to e-mail programs.

Of course Outlook / OE doesnt need to use MSN, but we have to be reminded of MS, lest we tend to just check out POP/IMAP mail. MS in its infinite marketting wisdom has decided that since you are alive, that qualifies you for the privelege of using Hotmail and speaking to your friends on MSN, irrespective of whether you prefer Yahoo Messenger or you prefer Gadzooks Webmail.

I use OE (usually use telnet or webmail) for the rare occasions that I use a front end on the rare occasions that I use a microsoft operating system. Had Eudora but it behaves finnicky with IMAP; not that OE isnt bugged with certain IMAP packages .. but its the lesser of the evils. The other reason I end up choosing OE is since 2K & XP are so huge, it makes no sense for me to waste more space on stuff that I am forced to use like for OE email or WMP for mp3 listening.
The one i vehemently wont have is Outlook; its overkill that is also flaky.

To stop MSN messenger from showing up when you launch outlook, download XP Anti-Spy:
http://www.xp-antispy.de/

As for the e-mail client, I use the e-mail client that comes with Mozilla ( http://www.mozilla.org/ )

Or just go to user preference and set it not to start automatically. Outlook is a great program if you need it. If all you need is email it is way overkill and not needed. But if you are busy and interact with a lot of different people through out the day it is a real time saver. If you conduct meetings or teleconferences with lots of participants you can do with Outlook in two minutes what you couldn't do in two days with a telephone.

I'm still using Pegasus. Been using it for 7 years and have no desire or need to change. Outhouse is not welcome on my machine, I use Act! for my contact manager.

There was a thread here which showed how to deactivate Messenger in XP but I forgot what was it and just can't find it using the search feature.

Oh. I was about to reply since I found how to disable MSM, but since it's included in the FAQ then I don't have to write it again.

Thanks!!

Just a FYI for those running XP w/SP1 you can uninstall MS Messenger with the Add/Remove applet.
