Win98 disc - "windows" folder

When you install new hardware/software, sometimes you are asked for the win98 installation disc. I know there is a way to copy the Windows folder from the installation disc to a folder on the hard drive so that the application will automatically be directed there...I once read it in a post here at PCMechanic, I just never copied the process down. Can some one refresh my memory on how to do this??

I use this utility from Analog X to point to where the files are stored.

Hi Dan,

I copied that information (I think HAL9000 posted it).

Boot with the Win98 startup disk and select CD-ROM support. Fdisk and partition the hard drive.

Reboot with the Win98 startup disk (w/CD-ROM support) and type FORMAT C:/S to format the boot partition and make it bootable.

Change to the c: drive and make a directory - MD WIN98 - to hold the Win98 CD files.

Change to that directory - CD WIN98 - and put the Win98 CD in the CD-ROM drive.

From the c: \win98 prompt, COPY X: \WIN98\*.* (substitute your actual CD-ROM drive letter for "X") to copy the NECESSARY files.

Remove the startup disk, boot to the hard drive, change to the Win98 directory (CD WIN98) and type SETUP and hit Enter. Setup will take over and start the Win98 installation.
