Faster Win98SE Startup?

It seems that it takes a long time for my computer to start up & I don't see what it running during startup but I can hear over my speakers each time something opens at startup. During this time the hourglass is running. Can anyone advise me what I can or cannot remove or cancel from the startup process and how I would go about doing this? Thanks, Sixpk.

In Win98, once it is up and running you can go to >Start>Run and type msconfig in the dialog box and click OK. You will get a little utility with tabs at the top. Go to the tab that says startup, and uncheck anything that you don't need in there. Mainly leave scanreg in there though. What about virus software that you have, sometimes that takes a bit to start.

In msconfig, there are NO programs you need to keep, although keeping scanreg is a good idea, and tweakui if you have it installed. Read this: http://members.cnx.net/reboot/tocache.htm for lots more, especially point #5.

Desktops don't need power profiles, they're great for laptops, where battery life is a consideration, take them out.
Systray is explained in detaio in the article, including how to remove the speaker icon if you absolutely must.
