Ok I am running windows XP on a AMD Athlon (tm) Processor, 851 MHz, 192 MB ram. My problem is this:
When I go on the web using internet explorer and do a search for something (doesnt matter what) when the results come back and I click on one of the links, my computer restarts. It also restarts on places I have been going to for a while. The only time it doesnt is on Yahoo messenger or in cheetachat or actually anything pertaining to yahoo. Help!!! This is annoying! |

Hi denise65,
How are you connected to the internet? Modem or broadband? If you have a NIC for broadband, what brand is it? I understand Netgear NIC's can cause some strange problems. What background programs are running on your system? Did this always happen or did it just start recently? Have you tried clearing the Temporary Internet Files? Have you checked for viruses, spyware and trojans? Cricket

hello!
I am connected thry pacbell dsl. I dont have netgear. I am not running any background programs. Yes this just started happening since I installed windows XP. I have cleared my temp files and checked for viruses, spyware and trojans. From what my event logging errors say I need a bios upgrade except my computer is so new that I already have the most recent version. Thanks in advance Denise |

Hi denise65,
Did you upgrade from Win98 or ME to WinXP? Or was it a clean install. Upgrading to WinXP seems cause problems and a clean install is recommended. Cricket

I think alot of restarts has to do with driver issues, also I have seen on some chat rooms that some are having problems with usb devices causing restarts.

Although upgrading from one OS to another often causes problems, for this particular problem, starting from scratch may or may not necessarily be required. There is a place in XP where the restart can be disabled [sorry don't have the exact way yet but someone may] ... it used to annoy me until I changed that setting and XP was a clean install on this PC.

This might help ... right click on 'My Computer', Properties, Startup and Recovery Settings and take the checkmark off 'Automatically restart' in the System Failure section. Hope that works for you.

Does the error message that you receive in the event log say anything about ACPI bios?

yes it does
ACPI_ERR_AMLI_ILLEGAL_IO_READ_FATAL %2: ACPI BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO port address (%3), which lies in the %4 protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance. |

Someone else may have another solution for you to try so don’t take any action just yet, but there are only a few alternatives that I can think of that you can do to resolve this issue 1. Go back to Windows ME. 2. Flash the bios so that the bios is ACPI compatible and does not interfere with the XP HAL. 3 Change the ACPI HAL to a Standard PC HAL in which you lose some plug and play features along with possibly having to manually shut down your PC. 4. Upgrade your motherboard to one that is ACPI compatible with Windows XP.
I hope someone smarter than I can come up with a solution to fix your problem. |

And this is one hell of a problem. The solutions you have suggested are not what I want to do. (of course) Should I try a clean windows XP installation? I'll even format my hard drive? Do you think maybe that might help?
Thanks for your help and taking the time to help me with this. |

What mobo do you have?
Your're definitely not getting restarts in Windows or when booting - just in IE? Unless it's very old it should be ACPI compliant. Check your specs in mobo manual and it should mention ACPI. The XP Upgrade Advisor should have warned you about potential incompatiblity problems when you were installing XP. If the system is fairly new, most problems tend to be minor and usually means installing new hardware drivers or reinstalling some software. If the Advisor finds a serious problem it will actually block the installation. Do you remember XP listing potential hardware or software problems when you were installing it? Before trying lil Jimmie's advice, I would suggest trying a few simpler things first. Try deleting all your cookies in case one is corrupt. Go to Add/Remove Programs>Internet Explorer>Remove and then click the Repair option. Instead of removing IE, this will check the files and repair any corrupt ones. Check Device Manager for any conflicts - particularly the modem. Check for any updated, XP approved modem drivers. Back-up your data, format and and do a clean install of XP. It may just be a bad upgrade. HTH Last edited by mike breck; 09-20-2002 at 03:40 AM. |
