Virus or ...?

I recently got en E-Mail and got message from OS taht says this file could contain something bad for your PC, but I downloaded the file, opened Norton 2002 and it found nothing while scanning this file, so I just opened to see what is this?

At the same time I ran SP1 udate for Windows XP that I never finished because it was to slow and I turned off my computer.

After a couple hours I turned on and :
I could not open any icon on the desktop( if I dobleclick on icons they disappear from the screen)

Norton 2002 was destroyed everithing in Norton antivirus was off I mean automatic scan etc.

MSN explorer did not work

System restore did not have any restore points( I know it had a few on sunday)

I reinstalled Norton but it doesn't work
Help

Hi eko976:

In spite of all the virus infections rampant all over, I cannot believe you would just not only download but actually run a file that you did not recognize??? Trusting files to a single antivirus is not good .. the first rule of keeping your computer infection free is using common sense.

Regards to whats going on with the computer, well it may or may not have been an infection. What stage of the install did u turn off the computer (when you say turn off .. did u do a shut down or a power off? sorry have to ask). Was it during the downloads stage that you shut down or was it during the installation stage? If it was during the downloading stage, then this shouldnt have happened, but if it was midway through the installation of SP1, then you might have rendered your XP installation useless.

Cool

Try repair. If it doesn't work you can always start fresh.
