I need some help with mspaint. When launching mspaint, the following error message comes up: "Paint has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
More info about the error: "AppName: mspaint.exe AppVer: 5.1.2600.0 ModName: mfc42u.dll ModVer: 6.0.8665.0 Offset: 00017103".
The path of Mspaint.exe version 5.1.2600.0 is %SystemRoot%\System32\mspaint.exe and the file is 332 KB in size. The path of MFC42U.DLL ver 6.0.8665.0 is C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfc42u.dll and same version 6.0.8665.0 is located at C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.Tools.VisualCPlusPlus.Runtime-Libraries_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.0.0_x-ww_ff9986d7\mfc42u.dll ... both 973KB.

I've tried quite a few things already to resolve this issue ... to no avail. I do not have another PC with WinXP readily available to work with. Would someone be kind enough to verify the location and size of these files or offer suggestion that may help to get it fixed.

BTW, the OS is WinXP home edition

The path is the same on this 2000 box that I have. The file sizes and locations are also the same. The version of paint that I have is slightly different though. Are you having this problem occur in any other program. Last time I encountered this kind of error, it turned out to be the printer driver. It could also possibly be a permission thing.

The above error only occurs with this program ... works fine with wordpad, calc, msoffice apps and other paint programs. It's been going on for a while on my wife's PC ... I don't use the PC much ... mostly when there's a problem with it.

I've tried moving the files around, tried win98 mspaint [same error], WinXP mspaint on a Win98 PC does not launch without mfc42u.dll and when I launch it again after adding that file, it says that it's only for winXP and that there is a problem with mfc42u.dll
One thing I'd like to try is with another mfc42u.dll [renaming the original ones in case that's not it] ... just to check.

Problem solved by deleting a key in the registry ...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Paint ... that key gets rebuilt the next time mspaint is launched.
I got the hint from
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q185501 although is was a solution for a slightly different problem there. Anyways all is well now.
