Missing CD-ROM
I am running Windows 98 SE on a HP 8575. After a recent windows update I no longer seem to have a CD-ROM installed. It is not listed under "MY Computer" or in the Device Manager. Both primary and secondary IDE controllers report as corrupted and cannot be fixed by updating or removing. If I attempt to read the recovery disk I get the error message, "no hard disk found, recovery aborted". Other than losing my CD-ROM all else seems fine. Sure could use some help and thanks.

I didn't see it in the link cuffs gave but some members who use the Windows update function have accidently downloaded Intel chipset drivers when in fact they have motherboards with VIA chipsets. Basically they were having the same symptoms you are describing so I would see if you have any type of Intel drivers installed in ADD/REMOVE. Not sure if they would show up in there but If you do have a VIA chipset then you should re-install the 4-in-1's to regain control of your drives back. Just my two cents.
Why not post the specs for your pc? Edrod13

Hi folks...
quoting Mike Breck "... check the CD-rom is being detected in the BIOS. If it's not being detected in the BIOS, then it won't show up in Windows. Enter, the BIOS by hitting the appropriate key when the PC is starting (with an Award BIOS this is usually "Del") and then see if BIOS sees the CD-Rom along with the other IDE drives. If it doesn't see it, then try having the BIOS autodetect it. If it does good. Exit the BIOS saving changes. If the BIOS doesn't see it, then the IDE cable is loose or faulty, the power lead to the CD-Rom is loose or faulty, the CD-Rom is faulty, or the mobo is faulty. " Sorry I wasn't specific as to which exact response I was referring to! *Sean* |

Hi all
Here's a link to the hp support site article for this problem: http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport...07162#P48_5242 There are a few articles on that webpage, the one specific to this model (8575) is the last on the list. Like Mike, Cuffs, & edrod13 mention, your bios needs to be able to see the drive for any fixes to work. It could well be a problem unique to your model & one of the MS updates, since the symptoms listed in their fix match yours. Their fix involves changing some settings, and then removing your current IDE controllers from Device Manager and letting Windows re-detect and re-install them. That should fix both your IDE controller drivers corruption, and your CDrom should appear in My Computer again Best of luck, post again if these don't work . . . Gary [p.s. ....the chipset of your model is the Intel BX, according to the Hp site, so don't have to worry about Via chipset conflicts] Last edited by GaryRouth; 09-20-2002 at 01:50 PM. |

Thanks for the help. I tried all the usual suspects and they proved confusing and circular. I finally fixed the problem (it fixed itself) after deleting Roxio's Go-Back (it was acting funny- couldn't find reentry points). Walla, there was my CD-Rom and all is well again. I hopew this helps someone else too.
