This Stop error is usually caused by faulty or incompatible hardware or software. A driver is attempting to access a memory location without authorization. Do you get anything else on the screen at the time? Sometimes the offending device driver appears in the Stop message and can provide a clue to solving the problem.

I would try playing some other games to see wether it is diablo 2 or a hardware driver.

Do you by chance have a nVidia video card? When I upgraded my son's computer to XP he got that error several times when playing games. Upgrading to the Detonator driver (I think he has either version 28.32 or 29.42) seems to have solved that problem...at least he doesn't get the error anymore.

Those drivers are available on nVidia's site....www.nvidia.com

Does the Diablo Readme file say anything about the Matrox card?

What about checking the Blizzard and Matrox sites.

don't wanna jump ahead or go overboard, but i had the EXACT same errors happen to me quite frequently when play games, or if not playing games the computer would lock up for no reason. i tried everything and even posted the same thing your posting now. it turned out to be the mobo was jacked so i sent it back, they sent a new one and everything is working great! *knock on wood*
