Never done it before

I'm installing XP for the first time on a machine that had Mandrake 8.2 previously installed.

XP recognized the previous partition of about 3500 MB and I selected to erase. After that it went directly to formatting without asking me what size I wanted the partition to be and after the complete install, the C drive only recognizes the 3500 MB of a 40 Gig drive.

My only previous experience with partitioning was with Mandrake where I could select the size of each partition.

I could find no way to select the size of the partitions in XP, or to select additional partitions.

Is there a partion wizard on XP?

How do I get XP to recognize all 40 Gigs of my hard drive.

Please help, as I have about 36 Hrs. left to finish setting this computer up and all downloads have to be done on a dial-up.

Hi pilotgi,

You can not resize partition with the WinXP Setup wizard, you can only delete and create them. Just delete all of the partitions, re-create a new one however large you want, and format it.

pilotgi, You can use disk management to delete, partition and format the remaining disk space, but you can’t change the partition size that XP is installed on without the use of a partitioning tool like Partitions Magic.

To locate disk management go to administrative tools, computer management then to disk management.

When in the partition portion of the setup, make sure you delete the existing partitions on the drive you want to install to, create a new one...then format the new partition.

Computer management says I have 3.42 Gig C: primary partition

243 MB extended partition

33.6 GB logical drive

Both extended partition and logical drive are listed as unknown partitions.

Does this look like a workable arrangement?

How do I save data/programs to the logical drive instead of C:?

Is this done with the install disc? How do you select the size of the partition?

I found the delete option for the remaining space. How do I partition and format?

Right click the image of the drive at the bottom...you cannot format C: though...so if it's C: you want to resize..you'll need to go back through the setup.
