Slow boot up

When I upgarded WinME to WInXP I upgarded my BIOS at the same time. Ever since I did the upgarde, my computer takes about miniute before WinXP starts (my screen has the HP Invent screen for about a minute before it does anything else). Since I did both upgrades on the same day, I don't know if it's a BIOS issue or a WinXP issue. (I'm no expert, so I wouldn't even no where or how to ascertain that.)

How do I diagnose and fix this?

After you boot up, go to:

Start > Run > type "msconfig" (without the " " ) and see what programs load during boot under the Startup tab... you could have a small truckload trying to load up on every boot, thus slowing down the process... there are quite a few programs you can uncheck to save a tiny bit of time...

also, since there is a TweakUI for XP, it may have a tab that can help speed up the process... Anyone know that for sure tho'??

Good luck

Hi 1AFN1,

WinXP should boot faster than Win98. But upgrading to WinXP over an existing Win 9x OS (Win98, Win98SE or WinME) tends to cause problems. It's better to do a clean install of WinXP instead.

Why did you upgrade the BIOS? Was it necessary for WinXP to function on that HP? Upgrading the BIOS shouldn't cause any slowdown in the boot process, unless it's not configured properly for your hardware.

Do you have a NIC installed in that HP?

1AFN1, The problem is within the bios settings if the HP Invent screen stays on that long. Your OS (XP) does not load until after the POST. Go into the bios and check to see if the “Quick Power on Self Test” is enabled.

Also check your Startup folder in Start Menu>Programs>Startup.

Drag any shortcuts of programs you don't want to start to another place on the Start Menu.

Check and disable any scheduled tasks you don't want to run when Windows starts. Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance>Scheduled Tasks. If you don't want to delete a Task, then just change it's schedule to Weekly or Monthly instead.

Also run Disk Cleanup and Defrag your HD.
