Hi regans cortina,
Open up the Device Manager tab of System Properties. Open the CDROMs outline. Pick the right CD (if you have more than one). Open Settings tab. Check the Auto Insert Notification box. Reboot. HTH TwoRails |

The easiest way to solve the problem is downloading TweakUI for Windows XP:

I've never tried it in XP, but it should be there.... What information was in the Device Manager for the CDs?? I do have an XP box, but I never use it as it's out in the work shed. I might have to bring it into the house... TwoRails |

hi tworails, ive only recently noticed that it doesnt auto detect.
everything that ive been told should be there, is there!, as far as i can see autoplay is all checked and ready, but the damn thing wont auto detect it! i have to do it manually. this is strange , cos it used to fire up nicely. |

Hi regans cortina,
The only thing I can think of right now is to Uncheck it, reboot, then Re-Check it, reboot. TwoRails |

tried that. if i look at properties, then autoplay, i choose the correct file type, apply it then go out of it. if i check it again , its gone back to music files. it keeps doing this. it doesnt stay on what i choose !!

Hi regans cortina,
I'm not an XP person. There is no file option in the area to set Auto Notification is at in prior versions of Windows... So, I don't really know if you in the same place as where I'm talking about. Just to clarify, you are saying that you have the option(s) to set file types in the System Properties > Device Manager?? TwoRails |

Show us the dialogue box you are getting
Regans Cortina,
Can I suggest that you capture a picture of the screen where the options are, and post it here for us to see. I use Win98, but I am assuming that the following will still work in XP. Get the dialogue box up on screen, then press Alt-Print Screen. This will copy the active window to the clipboard. Open up a graphics application (Microsoft Photo Editor is fine in Win98 if it is still there in XP), and paste the picture in as a new image. Save the image to your hard disk, then come here and attach it to a post for us to see. Hope that helps. David. Last edited by David_Jones; 09-27-2002 at 06:59 AM. |

right fellas, ive just been to a friends who also has xp, and when i put a cd in any of his drives, it loads up automatically. mine used to do this but wont anymore. i have done everything that people have told me but to no avail. i dont think a screenshot will help, as anyone with xp will know window pops up when you load up a cd.( i checked my friends settings , and they are the same as mine.

Does this work?
Part I: Open up My Computer > Right click on your CD Drive > Click Properties > There should be a tab for Autoplay From the drop down list you can select the type of CD (for example for music files) you can ask to prompt for an action or not prompt at all .. in essence you have to remove it from the default action and set it on Prompt me each time to choose an action. Part II: Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools (you have to be an admin on the system) > Services Start check to see if the service Removable Storage is Started and is running automatically, ifnot you might need to start it Part III: go to Start > Run > gpedit.msc > click OK (that is the group policy editor) go to Computer Configuration > Administrative templates > System Do you see the setting for Turn of Autoplay on the right? what is it set to? Double click it and set it to enabled (for all CD drives). Hope it works out. |

i have the answer in a book at home it should just be under properties when you explore under my computer go to the cd-rom properties and it should give you a tab with the auto play and what to open it with it will also have a box on the bottom to check to "always use this program to open these type files"it sounds like that you have all ready put in all the diferent media types and it remebers what to open it with
if i am repeating something let me know and i will look at my book at home... zaney123 |

I know this is the same thing as everyone has been saying but this is straight out of the book..
Setting AutoPlay Options for Removable Drives On devices that contain removable storage media, Windows is constantly on the lookout for newly inserted media. If you insert a CD or DVD into a drive, or connect a Windows XP–compatible digital camera, or pop a Compact Flash card into an external reader, Windows responds with a dialog box similar to the one shown in Figure 26-10. Figure 26-10. When Windows detects that you’ve inserted a new disk (or other media) into a removable storage device, it asks you how you want to handle the content. The Windows AutoPlay settings allow you to define different default actions for different types of content. For instance, you can specify that you want music CDs to play automatically in Windows Media Player or another application, while disks that contain mixed content open in a Windows Explorer window so that you can copy them to a local drive. You can adjust the default AutoPlay settings at any time on a per-drive basis. If you decide that you want digital photos on a Compact Flash card to open in a Windows Explorer window instead of in the Scanner And Camera Wizard, that’s your right. To adjust AutoPlay settings, open My Computer, right-click the icon for the drive in question, and then choose Properties. On the AutoPlay tab, choose different options for each type of content associated with that drive, as shown here. Last edited by ZANEY123; 10-01-2002 at 09:31 PM. |

I don't recall where I saw it but I have read that XP will not show the autoplay tab in certain circumstances and you can restore it if necessary. This may be what you are looking for:
