Because of the fact that MS is the leading seller and has a reputation as something evil by many, MS is the target of virus writers either as the vehicle of transmission and or the target of destructive viral activities. Since many users show an alarming lack of self control when it comes to virus transmission, MS took a draconian method of control " If you block the transmission of the virus (read attachements) you stop the virus." While it works, it can be a pain. There are work arounds: first just zip the files, zipped files are not blocked, or search this forum for the registry edit to turn off the blocked files types (I beleive this can be sone selectivly too) |

1. *shrug* Its a Microsoft product, and will function the way it feels like when it feels like
3. the winmail.dat is a file automatically generated by Exchange mail servers and programs like outlook and is as a result of Transport Neutral Encapsulation Format (TNEF). This occurs if you send mail in rich text (lovely fonts and pretty background grafix etc etc). Basically mail is designed to be format-free plain text; anything else is an attachment. A lot of the mail programs use html to code up the pretty looking stuff, much like a web page, and includes a section below that is the body of the mail devoid of any formatting. Microsoft servers and clients on the other hand decide to include a file as an attachment that contains the plain text mail; the contents of which depend on the method of encoding done by the mail server. You could try setting your Outlook to send mails in Plain Text, which might prevent the .dat file from going; sometimes it isnt something you can help because the mail server you are connecting to might be an Exchange server, and might decide to send it for u. |
