Hi Badboysean,
How long are you waiting for anything to happen? Is everything running in background turned off when you run Scandisk and Defrag? Is the screensaver turned off? How full is the c: partition? Have you cleaned out the Windows Temp and Temporary Internet Files folders? What OS are you using? You might want to try running Scandisk and Defrag from Safe Mode. Cricket

If your hard drive is full this could happen (should give yourself 15% of the drives capacity) or it may be checking the serface of the drive which takes a long, long time, especially if you have bad sectors. Like Cricket said try running scandisk in safe mode, or even in DOS.

Im running Windows .4.10.98, I have a 40 gig HD and I have 6gigs open. The screen saver is turned off along with everything else including my DSL connection. I havent cleaned out temp and internet temp ( Is that highly reccomended?) And if all else fail I will try safe mode. Any more responses are welcome.

Safe mode is the quick way to resolve the issue. But, run MSCONFIG and see what you have selected to start at boot time. If you are ending tasks via ctl-alt-del, be aware that all apps are not displayed.
You could also have a virus. So a full scan is worthwhile. As for clearing the temp files, it will make the scandisk run a little faster, but you definitely want to delete them (and empty the recycle bin) before a defrag. |
