IEXPLORE caused a general protection fault

I've been having this annoying little problem with W98SE and IE 5.5. When surfing the net I constantly get this message.

IEXPLORE caused a general protection fault
in module USER.EXE at 001c:000013b8.

IE shuts down and restarts but 15 minutes later I get the same message. I searched this forum and saw one post about this issue but the guy eventually gave up and bought XP. I can't find much helpful info at Microsoft's site either. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Try deleting everything in your 'temperary internet files' folder. Also you may want to check and see if you have any other programs that are running you dont need when your surfing. You can do this by just hitting ctrl>alt>del and see what's running. general protection fault is normally a memory problem because of some kind of software conflict. You can also use 'msconfig' and uncheck any programs you dont need to load up when you boot your computer, they will still work just they (any you may uncheck) dont load up when you start your computer.

removed a couple programs from the systems tray and things seem to be fine now. Thanks very much for the tip. Much appreciated. Now if I could just solve my sound card trouble I'd be content but I'll take that one to the appropriate board, thanks again.
