Messed around in "File Types"...
I'm not sure if this will be the same for you guys or not, but if you open a folder, click Tools, Folder Options, then click on the tab that says "File Types", there should be an entry near the top that says "(NONE) File Folder". Well, i wanted to change default icon for folders, so I clicked that, then on the button that says "Advanced". In the window that pops up, i clicked "Change Icon" and selected my new icon. So far so good, right? Wrong. Now, whenever I click on a folder, Windows opens the "Find files and folders" thing. Apparently, "Search" is the default command for opening folders now. Anyone know how I can get it back? Thanks...
P.S.- I already tried clicking "new" and adding the open command as the default. However, whenever i click "new", it asks for the command (presumably "open") and then a program to execute that command. thats another stumper. thanks again |

Download and Install TweakUI, just do a google search for it, then run the repair feature.

Ok I have NO idea if this will work, so use at your own risk, but this is the only solution I can think of short of trying a repair .. or a system restore:
take a look at the reg file I have attached; compare with the registry trees that you have in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder if there are differences, u can either manually change it or rename the file attached to folder.reg or something and then double-click it to merge to registry. Hope this helps. |

i really appreciate that, statica, but i have no idea what to do with that. i tried comparing it, but got lost
by the way, i have an update. i went through the file associations thing, and i clicked "new". under action, i put "open" and under program, i put "c:\windows\explorer.exe". now, when i double click on folders, they open in a new window instead of the current one. but at least they open. any idea how to fix this last part? btw, i already checked "open in same window" in folder options.

Since the OS is XP, go to the system tools and run the restore feature picking a point before you messed with the file views.

Did you try saving the file as a .reg and doubleclicking it?
