Exclamation Missing Address Bar

Hi All:

After upgrading from IE 5.5 to 6, I can't slide the Address bar
over and type in a new URL.

The address bar is there, but it's grayed out, and I can't slide it over.

If there's somewhere else that I need to go to now, I can't find it.

Sure would appreciate your input on this, as I need to be able to
type in an URL.

Thanks ahead of time,

Bill Lane

Try this:
right click on the word "address" on the address bar(or on the button bar, where there are no buttons or between the buttons); a pop up menu will appear. Click on "Address bar". The Address bar should disappear. Repeat. The Address bar will appear again.

If that doesn't help, uninstall all versions of IE, reboot, then install the latest verson. That should work if the above method doesn't.

Good luck

Hi force_flow2002:

I already tried the first suggestion, thanks!

If I uninstall all versions of IE, what will I have as a browser to get back on the internet to go to Windows Updates to reinstall IE 6 ?

Hi ZANEY123:

I guess I'm getting senile in my old age, but won't Windows Updates install IE 6 when I download it?

I must be missing something :-(

Hi all: BillL, Zaney, forceflow:

Since most IE6 downloads from the Windows Update site use an "Active Update", they install immediately after the download by default. You do still have a copy of the installation files in a temporary Windows Update folder usually containing a text file (.txt) that has "this folder is safe to delete" as its title. You can reinstall IE6 by running the IE6setup.exe (or something like that) installation file in that folder. You can also choose to run a "Repair" of IE6 from Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information . . . and from the "Tools" menu choose "Repair Internet Explorer".

But sounds like perhaps you just need to unlock your toolbar. Try right-clicking on the IE toolbar (up near the MS Windows logo but not on it), and unselecting "lock the toolbars", then make whatever changes or customizing you wish to do. It's a nice customizing menu, lots of options as to which toolbars you want to display, what shortcuts you want on them, etc.

I'm not sure if the latest download of IE6 includes all the security patches that they bundled into their IE6 Service pack 1. That download is an option for you, too. Very stable by all reports so far, but then IE has been stable for years (prone to hacking, perhaps, but stable). I have the IE6 SP1 on all my machines both at the lab and here at home, and no problems at all.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

Hi ZANEY123 & GaryRouth:

Okay, I tried the repair first, didn't work.

Then I uninstalled IE6, then went back to uninstall IE 5.5, but it wasn't showing in "Add and Remove Programs", so I went ahead and upgraded with the IE6setup.exe that I found in C:/Windows/Windows Update Setup Files folder, still no luck.

I went to the Windows Update site / Installed Programs I think it's called, and downloaded the IE 6 Upgrade again from there, it said that it needed to download some extra files, and ask if that was ok, I clicked ok, and IE 6 installed again, I rebooted, and still have the same problem, no funtioning address bar :-(

I also tried right clicking up near the Windows logo, but there's no Lock the Toolbar pop up in the menu.

I guess there must be an answer to this problem, but I don't have a clue as what the next step might be, but thanks so far for the input!!!

Hi Again ZANEY123 & GaryRouth:

Well it's working now :-)

I was off line, and in Explorer, and I clicked up next to the Windows logo, and wahlah, there's the pop up with the "Lock The Toolbar", I locked, and unlocked a couple of times, then went on line, and now the address bar works just fine :-)

So, thanks for all the help !!!, I'm happy now !!!
