lock ups, im stuck

Im tring to help a friend out here. He has a pc with xp pro on it keeps locking up with no error. I will lock up any time it wants to but it will all ways lock up on cs.

system
850 thunderbird
256 pc 133 ram
western digital 30 gigabyte ata 100 hard drive
gigabyte mobo
300 watt powersuply
voodoo 4 video card

Hi Airmack,

Have him run the PC with the case sides removed. If the freezing goes away, it's a heat related issue. Add case fans or install a better CPU heatsink. Also take a look at the video card overheating.

Did he do a clean install of WinXP Pro or did he upgrade from an earlier OS? Upgrading tends to give you an unstable system. A clean install on a new or formatted hard drive is recommended.

Agrees with cricket.Most lockups like the ones your describing are heat related,also make sure memory ,sound cards and video cards are all properly seated.Good luck.

Ill have to go back over or get a hold of him to ask if it was a upgrade or fresh install.

I told him to format but he does not want to lose his CS stuff which he has to HL cd for...

Last time I seen him he had no case fan and I told him to get one but ill have to get a hold of him.

Oh and cricket, no more rabbit icon?

I dont...

He has no case fan but the sides are off and it still does it.

But he did not format the drive, im going to try to talk him into doing that...
